Overnight camping at Chiricahua National Monument

I remembered how Fred and Karen Call loved to come here with their kids. Don and I came for an overnighter and found a delightful campground, awesome hikes and views which revamped the soul. The day we got there we hiked a 4 mi. loop and the next day we took the camp van up to the top then hiked down a 7 mi trail (it even hailed on us!) We thought it would all be downhill but we were wrong! These pix sure don't do justice to the grandeur of this place.
It seemed every other bush was a manzanita. The blossoms were so pretty!
Our pretty little camp spot. The temp was in the 30's when we got up!
This rock formations is called 'Duck on a Rock.' The trails were amazing and Don was always pointing out what an engineering feat they were. The CCC built them and they truly are something. I love going places with Don because he notices things I don't and I learn so much. Don't you want to just step into this picture and start hiking????
The following story made me sad so I took a pix of this description: Harris Mt. perpetuates the name of a pioneer family who died at the hands of Apaches in 1873. The Harris family had been part of a westward bound wagon train. When the family attempted to take a short cut through the Chiricahua Mts they dissappeared. Several years later soldiers from nearby Fort Bowie found one of the Harris girls in an Apache camp in Mexico. She told them what had happened and led them to the spot at Harris Mt. where the Indians had killed her family. There they found and buried the remaining bones. A carved headboard marks the gravesite.
We just knew our grandkids would love to explore this place!
